Grenada Dove
Leptotila wellsi
Mt Hartman NP, Grenada - November 8 2025
The rarity and acute threat of extinction of the Grenada dove first caught my attention decades ago. But would I ever actually get to Grenada to search for the bird? Well, here I finally was, on the trail leading into the dense, thorny dry forest, which is under constant threat from hotel and golf course developers, as well as from the next hurricane. I could hear the first birds calling before dawn, but it took me an hour to get close enough to see one. Some 100-200 birds are hanging on.
