Southern Sooty Woodpecker

This woodpecker is classified as vulnerable and is scarce or rare throughout its range. Difficult to find if there is no know breeding pair, and this year they were not breeding on the stake-out site. So, with low expectations, the euforia was instant when this male flew in and perched in the nearby trees.
