Flamecrest

To me personally the Flamecrest was the most important of all Taiwanese birds to see and photograph. It is not a difficult bird to find in high altitude conifers, but there are quite few high quality photos of this bird. I was hoping to get one. Sao Tome Ibis

To me, the Sao Tome Ibis (or Dwarf Ibis) was the quintessential São Tomé bird long before I set foot on the island. So rare, not seen for more than 60 years until its rediscovery in 1989. We were fortunate to first hear them at night from our muddy campsite in the wet forest. Kagu

The Kagu is clearly the most unique and iconic bird of the south-west Pacific region, and the taxonomic relationship to any other birds remain unclear. Although an endangered species, with less than a thousand individuals, they are still easy to find in Parc de la Rivière Bleue. They are odd creatures, inquisitive and uttering strange sounds. Bristle-thighed Curlew

The Bristle-thighed Curlew has a very narrow breeding range in western Alaska. Breeding grounds are on remote montane tundra and there are few accessible sites. We found them at Coffee Dome about 3 hours drive from Nome. Actually we heard the first bird shortly after having parked the Jeep. Then we found at least 4 birds, heard even more. This was the last living member in the Numenius genus that I needed for my list. Read more >

Emperor Bird-of-paradise

Two males of Emperor Bird-of-paradise in the top of the display tree. This was a fantastic moment as the birds were displaying for a considerable time. These birds a threatened by deforestation and their plumes are still sought after for ritual ornamentation. Read more >

Strange-tailed Tyrant

The very strange-tailed Strange-tailed Tyrant was indeed one of our first targets on our Paraguay journey. The site was right on the roadside as we were heading north-west towards Filadelfia. But we missed it! Then again, and again. Finally on our fourth attempt at the end of the trip we scored. Thus this species certainly built up to become the no 1 Bird of the trip! The species occupies tall grasslands only in Paraguay and adjacent Argentina. Read more >

Welcome to My World of Bird Photography! This site represents the 5811 bird species (as of Feb 2024) I have been photographing worldwide in the past two decades. My photos have been published in hundreds of books and magazines, and since I’m keen on bird conservation, photos are donated to not-for-profit organisations, education and research. This will continue with this relaunched site that originally went live in 2008.

If you are looking for images of a certain species, please use the search function in the menu bar. Inside a gallery, explore the sort function if you like. You can sort by taxonomy, species name, by date etc… Back and forth. If you find a photo that you would like to publish or use in any other way, please contact me first.

Naming and taxonomy intend to follow IOC World Bird List.
