Mao
Gymnomyza samoensis
Malololelei Reserve, Upolu Island, Samoa - October 28 2018
A Mao foraging in a Coral Tree. This huge, endangered and endemic honeyeater has a reputation of being hard to find, or at least tricky to see well as it has been decreasing in numbers in its small range. The news is that the population seems to be recovering (at least locally) thanks to a cat eradication program and other measures. Maybe we were lucky, but we found a family group of Maos almost instantly when we began searching for it.
