Thorny Devil

Thorny Devil

Moloch horridus
Francois Peron National Park, Western Australia - August 10 2024

The winter-month of August might not be a very good time to expect a wide range of reptiles in southwest Australia, and I can confirm this now. I only saw a handful, including two run-away monitor lizards that I was unable to ID. But my most wanted herp-target didn’t disappoint. Thanks to a map of observations on the iNaturalist website, I could locate a trusty stretch of sandy track at Shark Bay. This ant-eating Thorny Devil was as cool as it was thorny, allowing me to take photos from every angle.
